As Taliban forces continue to take control of Afghanistan, tens of thousands of people are attempting to flee the country and seek refuge. Many fear what the return of Taliban rule will mean for the country’s citizens in general, and for women and girls in particular. If you are interested in helping the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, we have included some suggestions below.

For the Nations Refugee Outreach serves refugees in the Dallas area. It offers a wide variety of education and provide resources to make the transition into the United States as easy as possible. Its education programs include teaching English and literacy, teaching life skills, connect refugees to the community, and to share the gospel. You can give directly to their Afghan New Arrival Fund to help provide furniture, household items, groceries, and other new arrival needs to families from Afghanistan arriving in the Dallas Area.

Global Giving partners with vetted nonprofits working within the region. Its partners are helping those who are most at risk-including women, children, and activists-stay safe. Your donation will support their life-saving work. All donations to this fund will support both emergency and long-term relief in Afghanistan. As additional needs emerge from this rapidly changing situation, it will support the efforts of vetted organizations that are local to impacted areas. You can find the list of vetted partners and projects here. You can donate directly to a specific project or to GlobalGiving’s Afghanistan Emergency Fund and the funds will be allocated to the area of most need.

Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) is the largest faith-based nonprofit dedicated to serving vulnerable immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees in the U.S. The organization resettles refugees, reunites children and parents, and rekindles the American Dream. You can donate directly to their “Neighbors in Need: Afghan Allies Fund” which will provide food, housing assistance, clothing, and other basic needs for Afghanistan refugees as they await official services available to them.

Women for Afghan Women (WAW) is a grassroots civil society organization dedicated to protecting and promoting the rights of disenfranchised Afghan women and girls in Afghanistan and New York. In particular, WAW works to help Afghan women and girls exercise their rights to pursue their individual potential to self-determination, and to representation in all areas of life—political, social, cultural, and economic. WAW relentlessly advocates for women’s rights and challenges the norms that underpin gender-based violence to influence attitudes and bring about change. WAW is currently working 24/7 to keep clients, staff, and families alive and safe. It is evacuating centers, pausing operations, and continually assessing risks. It is working to provide safe shelter, resources, and aid to keep the thousands of women, children, families, and the staff who are under their care.

Women for Women International invests in women survivors of war and conflict, providing them with social and economic skills to transform their lives. Donations to Women for Women will be used for activities that specifically support its Afghan response such as adapting programs to the current situation, supporting program participants and staff in the country or refugees forced to leave, advocacy work specifically related to the situation in Afghanistan, additional security support staff and operations, and other solutions may be developed in the coming days. Its top priorities are protecting staff and being a lifeline to the women they serve. It is also organizing psychosocial support for some of the most vulnerable staff and for women they serve.

When Making Donations

If you decide to donate, we encourage you to give to one of these organizations or an organization you know. Make sure your donation is secure by donating through an organization’s official website or sending a check in the mail. GoFundMe sites or links through social media sites are discouraged because of scams exploiting this disaster. For all donations, please specify that the donation is to assist the people affected by the earthquake in Haiti.
